(Poster award winner IFMAD2019)

“Participating in IFMAD had a profound impact on my career as it was my first time winning an award at an international conference, which left a lasting impression on me. Since then, I've been collaborating with several researchers from overseas, greatly enriching my work. I would recommend this event to others because it offers open opportunities to researchers from various parts of the world, fostering a diverse and enriching academic experience.”

Serotonin release and serotonin receptors in depression: New PET studies
Gitte Moos Knudsen (Denmark)

Key Insights:

  • PET, when used with appropriate radioligands, can non-invasively capture acute changes in brain serotonin

  • With novel radioligands, it has been demonstrated that pharmacologically induced serotonin release is lower in patients with MDD than in controls

  • Unmedicated patients with MDD have less cerebral 5-HT4 receptors

  • People with seasonal affective disorder cannot regulate their cerebral serotonin transporter across seasons as healthy people do.
