This year the IFMAD meeting follows the long dark days of the Covid19 pandemic. The meeting of minds will, as always, give updates on treatment of psychiatric disorders and discuss current controversies maintaining the tradition of free and open discussion with major international experts.
The mental health effects of the COVID19 pandemic are addressed by Carmen Moreno and updates on treatment of anxiety disorders are offered by Borwin Bandelow and the prevention of suicide by Philippe Courtet. Potential hazards in the treatment of anxiety and depression are surveyed by David Baldwin, the treatment of resistant depression by Siegfried Kasper, depression as an episodic treatment by Philip Gorwood and Allan Young provides a timely review of functional outcome in bipolar disorders. Edward Vieta discusses the evidence for and place of novel antipsychotics and Istvan Bitter questions whether monotherapy is the gold standard in treating schizophrenia.
New hot topics include the latest on the use of psychobiotics in stress disorders discussed by Ted Dinan, and the evidence for the potential use of psychedelics in psychiatry discussed by Sidney Kennedy. Naomi Fineberg enlightens us on the link between and treatment of impulsive and compulsive disorders, Marta Torrens on the problems of depression in substance abuse disorders and Bernard Baune reviews the role of inflammation in mood and anxiety disorders. Alessandro Serretti questions the use of polygenic risk scores in choice of treatment in psychiatric disorders and Chiara Fabbri asks how soon personalised medicine treatment is coming to psychiatry.
The programme is full and provocative and we all look forward to the opportunity to update ourselves at IFMAD in July 2021.
